Products
Vilaweb's main product is its website.
In terms of content, Vilaweb tries to set itself apart from other newsrooms. To this end, they have made fundamental strategic decisions:
They only report on politics, business, culture and science. Everything else is consistently omitted.
They report on national topics in Catalan and see themselves as a newsroom for the whole nation, not as a local or regional newspaper as most competitors in Catalonia do.
The subscription or membership model is voluntary. People pay for Vilaweb primarily to support the community.
In addition to news coverage, analyses and interviews that are independent of current affairs play an important role. At least four such articles are published every night for the next day. Subscribers receive these articles in advance in an extra newsletter.
There are more products, some only available to subscribers. Apart from the subscribers-only newsletter, there are other thematic newsletters covering different beats or being written as personal newsletters by certain journalists.
Vilaweb also produces podcasts. The most important one is a weekly video-podcast with two journalists discussing politics, reaching around 60,000 people weekly.
There are also audio versions of Vilawebs articles, but only accessible for subscribers. The same is for games, which Vilaweb started some time ago by hosting their own Catalan version of the New York Time’s spelling bee, now also offering crossword puzzles and Worldly.
Five years ago Vilaweb shifted its focus to reach more young people, by doing more video content and also products specifically designed for younger audiences, e.g. a podcast about being a mother, made by a 25 year old female journalist.
