VilaWeb (Spain)
Summary
Vilaweb is a national community newsroom from Spain. Deeply rooted in the Catalan independence movement, they were one of the first newsrooms in Spain fully adopting a digital-only strategy in 1995. Vilaweb also was an early adopter of a membership model to finance journalism, in which the community pays a voluntary subscription in order to support the mission. Vilawebs membership model was introduced 2004. In 2014 Vilaweb had around 2,000 subscribers. Today more than 25,000 subscribers support Vilaweb financially.
Subscribers not only support the newsroom financially, they are also important to inform Vilawebs reporting and governance.
