Journalism is often perceived as political and as a for-profit business, complicating Mensagem's efforts to secure support. Moreover, in the current polarized climate of Portugal, there are additional editorial challenges to navigate as a small media organization. Being deeply embedded in the community, Mensagem faces the daily challenge of maintaining a clear distinction between journalism and activism. Carvalho still sees significant potential in having their own café for building a community.
